65+ Population Growing Faster Than Overall U.S. Population

The number of Americans age 65 and older increased 15.1% between 2000 and 2010, compared to 9.7% growth among the total population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The number of men age 65 and older grew almost twice as fast as the number of women: 20.5% vs. 11.3%. Women make up 56.9% of those age 65+, down from 58.8% in 2000.

Americans 65 and older comprise 13.0% of the total population — an all-time high. The number of Americans age 100 or older increased 5.8% between 2000 and 2010. Women make up 82.8% of adults 100 or older.
