College Students Can’t Live Without Their Technology

More than two in three college students (68%) can’t go more than one hour without using some sort of digital technology, and 40% can’t last more than 10 minutes, according to digital content provider CourseSmart.

Nearly all college students (98%) who own digital devices use them for school. They are more likely to bring laptops than print textbooks to class (51% vs. 39%). Almost eight in 10 (79%) have done online searches using mobile devices or tablets while in class to verify something right before an exam.

Almost all students (96%) have taken courses that included online components, and 79% have submitted papers or assignments online. More than seven in 10 (71%) have taken online tests.

More than half of students (58%) have taken online courses. Their primary motivations for doing so are the ability to incorporate the class into their own schedules (63%), not having to be physically on campus (48%), and being able to learn at their own pace (47%).

Professors are also incorporating technology into their lives. More than eight in 10 (84%) post class syllabi online, and 78% send class news or updates via in-school networks. Nearly one in five students (18%) have received materials from their professors via Facebook.

Almost six in 10 (58%) say they are “frequently” unable to complete required reading in time for class. Among those who use digital devices for school, 68% say the devices save them at least two hours of schoolwork per day, while 14% say technology saves them at least five hours of additional work per day.
