Men make up the majority (57%) of federal government workers, while women make up the majority (61%) of local government workers, according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research. State governments’ workforces are relatively gender-balanced.
The preponderance of women in local government positions reflects the high ratio of women to men among public school teachers.
The top occupation for federal workers is postal service carrier (both men and women). Among state government workers, the most common occupations are elementary and middle-school teacher (women) and post-secondary teacher (men). At the local level, the most common government occupations are elementary and middle-school teacher (women) and police or sheriff’s patrol officer (men).
