Women Flock to Nail Art

Women without children are more likely than moms to use nail art accessories (24% versus 11%), according to Mintel. At the same time, moms are more likely than women without children to use colored nail polish (79% versus 65%) and artificial nails (22% versus. 9%).

Women ages 18-24 are more likely than older women to use colored nail polish (85% versus 71%), nail art (33% versus 16%), artificial nails (23% versus 14%), and gel nail polish (14% versus 10%). Young women are also more influenced by fashion trends than older women and are willing to experiment with new looks.

A majority of women (58%) say they polish their toenails-and 31% polish their fingernails-more in the summer months than during the winter. More than half (54%) would get their nails done at a salon more frequently if it were less expensive; however, 27% are concerned about health and safety at salons, and 18% believe getting their nails done in a salon takes too much time.

Americans are expected to spend $2.5 billion in 2013 on nail color and care, up 72% since 2007.
