Millennials Are Trying to Drive Less Often

4/5/2013

More than four in 10 drivers ages 18-34 (44%) have made an effort to reduce how much they drive in the past year, according to Zipcar. About four in 10 drivers of all ages say they’re driving less in order to protect the environment. While environmental conservation may be a factor in Americans’ efforts to drive less, most are also feeling the effects of high fuel prices and other costs associated with car ownership.

The majority of drivers ages 18-34 and half of those ages 45-54 say they’d drive less than they do now if there were more transportation alternatives available to them. The ability to shop online and connect via social networks is helping Americans cut down on time spent driving. More than two-thirds of drivers under age 55 say they’re at least somewhat more likely to make purchases online rather than drive or take public transportation to a store.

Nevertheless, drivers age 35 and older say losing their cars would have a greater impact on them than losing their computers, mobile phones, or televisions. Drivers ages 18-34 would be more affected by losing their computers or their mobile phones than by losing their cars.

Almost half of those 18-34 years old (47%) and 35-44 years old (46%) say they sometimes choose to spend time with their friends online instead of driving to see them.
