Maryland, New York, Massachusetts Achieve Passing AP Grades

The number of high school students taking Advanced Placement (AP) math or science exams has nearly doubled, from 250,465 in the class of 2002 to 497,924 in the class of 2012, according to the College Board. The number of high school graduates taking AP exams increased from 30% among the class of 2011 to 32% among the class of 2012. The number of high school graduates scoring three or higher on these exams grew from 18% in 2011 to 20% in 2012.

Some 300,000 students in the class of 2012 were identified as having a high likelihood of scoring three or higher on the AP exam, yet did not take any recommended AP exam. Hispanic and black students are less likely than white and Asian students to take AP exams.

Some 127,358 U.S. high school teachers taught an AP course last year.
