Millennials are more likely to say that a mobile device on the table during a meal is appropriate (56% versus 31%) and more likely to think it’s appropriate to text during a meal (50% versus 15%) than those over age 30, according to USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism’s The Center for the Digital Future and research agency Bovitz.
Millennials do differ on their opinions depending on the circumstance. The most inappropriate use of a mobile device during class is to talk (92%), followed by use email (65%), browse the Web (63%), and text (58%). More than half (56%) also feel it’s inappropriate to place a mobile device on a table during class.
Millennials (54%) are less likely to think it’s inappropriate to send email on a mobile device during a meeting than those ages 25-34 (68%), 35-44 (73%), 45-54 (89%), and over age 55 (89%). Notably, this tolerance differs depending on the device. Only 11% of basic cell phone owners feel it’s appropriate to text during a meeting, compared to 25% of smartphone owners.
