Teen Girls Are Financially Illiterate

Only one in three girls ages 8-17 knows what a credit score is (38%) or how credit card interest and fees work (37%), according to Girl Scouts of the USA. Four in 10 (40%) don’t know how to use a credit card. A little more than one in 10 (12%) feel confident to make financial decisions.

However, 90% of tween and teen girls say it is important for them to learn how to manage their money. A similar percentage (88%) say it is likely they will make more money than their parents.

A majority of teen and tween girls say it’s likely they will have careers that they enjoy (98%), be able to provide for their families (96%), and will own their own homes (95%).

Nearly three in four girls say both men and women are equally likely to be financially responsible (73%) or to be in a lot of debt (72%).
