Millennials Who Drink Are Well-Educated White-Collar Workers

Of the 71% of U.S. adults who drink alcoholic beverages, 27% are millennials (ages 21-34), according to Scarborough Research. Millennials who drink are 19% more likely than all adults age 21 and older to be employed full-time and 21% more likely to be working in white-collar jobs. Three in 10 (30%) have college degrees or more education.

Beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage among millennials, and domestic light beers are the most widely purchased type. Grocery stores are millennials’ top place to buy beer and wine, while hard liquor is most often purchased at liquor stores.

Millennials who drink alcohol are twice as likely as the average adult to have consumed a nonalcoholic energy drink in the past seven days and 52% more likely to have had a sports drink in that time. They’re also heavier users of bottled water (48% more likely than average), specialty coffees (37% more likely), and bottled/canned tea drinks (33%).

More than half of millennials who drink alcohol (57%) have eaten at McDonald’s in the past month. More than a third (36%) have eaten at Subway in the past month, 31% have eaten at Taco Bell, 27% at Burger King, and 27% at Wendy’s.
