The total number of consumers who subscribe to multichannel TV service providers declined in 2012, for the first time since Leichtman Research Group began tracking more than 10 years ago. Multichannel providers lost a net total of 80,459 subscribers during the past year. The net loss was driven by losses of cable company customers. Satellite providers gained 160,000 subscribers, and telephone companies providing multichannel service gained 1,319,000 subscribers. Cable companies had a net loss of 1,559,459 customers during the year.

More than 1 million TV subscribers canceled their service in 2012 (1.1% of all subscribers) to rely on online video, rentals, and/or services such as Netflix, according to The Convergence Consulting Group. A total of 3.74 million did so between 2008 and 2012. By the end of 2013, an estimated 4.7 million will have cut the cord to rely on online video and streaming services.
