Americans consider providing values and emotional support for their children to be the most important roles of today’s fathers, according to the Pew Research Center. While these roles are also considered the most significant duties of mothers, Americans consider being a financial provider more important for fathers than for mothers.
Parents are more likely than nonparents to consider providing discipline to be extremely important (50% of parents vs. 42% of nonparents). Adults ages 65 and older are less likely than those younger than 65 to consider any of these roles extremely important for fathers.
Women are more likely than men to feel that it’s extremely important for fathers to provide emotional support to their children (58% of women and 46% of men say so).
Black Americans are significantly more likely than Caucasians to consider it extremely important for fathers and mothers to provide income for their children. The gap is largest when it comes to mothers as financial providers.
