The average age when children first get acne is 12, according to pharmaceutical company Galderma Laboratories. However, 27% of moms say their children first started having acne at ages 9-11.
Most moms (52%) whose kids haven’t had acne don’t think their children are old enough to get it. Yet, 93% of these moms say they will be concerned when it does happen, primarily because their children will feel embarrassed (74%) and unattractive (67%).
Moms aren’t seeking medical guidance for their children’s complexions. Nearly nine in 10 (86%) have never taken their children to a dermatologist, and only 41% would mention skin problems during a visit with their child’s pediatrician.
A child’s age determines how moms treat acne. Moms of children 9-11 are more likely to tell their children to wash their faces more often than to use an over-the-counter treatment (50% vs. 26%). Only 5% would take the child to a dermatologist. On the other hand, moms of 13-year-olds are more likely to suggest using an over-the-counter medication than to recommend their child wash his or her face more often.
