Tablet Owners Spend More Than Smartphone Owners on Virtual Goods

In-game spending for virtual goods on tablet devices generates $914 million per year, according to mobile game developer PlayFirst and Frank N. Magid Associates. In-game virtual good spending on smartphones generates $341 million per year.

Nearly seven in 10 (69%) tablet owners play games on their devices. Around one in three (31%) buy in-game virtual goods, spending an average of $48 each during the past year.

Some 54 million smartphone owners play games on their devices, with 19% paying for in-game virtual goods, and are spending an average of $32 each year.

The average tablet gamer downloaded 25 games in the last 12 months; one in five were paid games. The average smartphone gamer downloaded 20 games in the past year. iOS (Apple) gamers are more likely than Android owners to play games, purchase games, and buy in-game virtual goods.
