More than three in four families (77%) with children in grades K-12 say the economy is having an impact on their back-to-school spending plans, according to the National Retail Federation and BIGinsight. Last year, families with children in grades K-12 spent $690 on school-related merchandise.
Families living in the Midwest are more likely than families living in other U.S. regions to say the economy will not impact their back-to-school spending. Likewise, parents ages 55-64 are twice more likely than parents ages 18-24 (31% vs. 18%) to say the economy has not impacted their back-to-school spending.
Although few families say the economy is forcing their child to switch from private to public schools, those living in the South (8%) and West (7%) are more likely to say so than those living in the Northeast (5%) and Midwest (6%).
