Retail Apps Aren’t Living Up to Consumers’ Expectations

8/16/13

Nearly six in 10 smartphone owners (58%) use their mobile devices for retail-store-related shopping activities, but retail apps are falling short of consumer expectations, according to Xtreme Labs. Smartphone owners give the average retailer app for iOS 2.9 stars out of five possible stars, and the average retailer app for Android just 2.2 stars.

The most common complaints about retailers’ apps for iOS are a lack of features, frequent crashes, and poor design. Top complaints about retailers’ apps for Android are crashes, failure to work as intended, and lack of features.

Only two retailers received favorable ratings for apps on both mobile platforms: drug stores CVS Caremark and Walgreens. Just over half of retailers (56%) offer apps for both mobile platforms, while three in 10 (30%) don’t offer apps for either platform. Almost two-thirds (65%) offer iOS apps, and 61% offer Android apps.

The study includes detailed breakdowns of app ratings for the top 100 retailers in the U.S.
