Chocolate is Americans’ favorite flavor of ice cream, edging out vanilla by a slim margin (27% vs. 23%), according to Harris Interactive. People who live in the Midwest (31%) or South (30%) are more likely than those who live on the East (22%) or West (21%) Coasts to prefer chocolate. Men are more likely than women to favor vanilla or strawberry, while women exhibit a stronger preference than men do for chocolate or mint chocolate chip.
Although the top format for eating ice cream is simply spooning it from a cup, women are more likely than men to prefer eating ice cream in cones. Hot fudge is the universal favorite ice cream topping. Gen Xers (those ages 37-48) are more likely than those in other age groups to enjoy nuts on their ice cream, while millennials (those ages 18-36) are more likely than others to prefer theirs topped with whipped cream, candy, or sprinkles.
