How Children Play Casual Games

9/15/2013

Children may have a variety of devices to use when it comes to playing casual games, but console devices are their preferred option. Some 81% of parents who own these devices say their children play games “most often” using a stationary or handheld video game console (81% each), according to Kidscreen’s iKids. Kids also play casual games using computers (79%) and the iPad (70%).

Their preferred device, however, varies by age. Those ages 2-9 most often play on an iPad, whereas 10-to-13-year-olds play games on computers. Three in four parents (75%) play games with their children using a video game console, and 53% play with them using an iPad.

Parents aren’t always willing to pay for games. They typically expect their children to “try it out” with a free version before moving on to in-game payment options. Subscriptions are the least-favored payment model by parents.

Parents typically download free games for their children on smartphones (58%) and computers (48%). When they do pay for games, parents spend more than $10 per month purchasing iPad games.
