U.S. consumers shop for groceries an average of 7.8 times per month, including groceries purchased at channels other than traditional grocery stores, according to The Hartman Group. Grocery shopping habits vary by household income; lower-income households shop less often than middle- or high-income households. Four in 10 households (39%) shop for groceries once a week, while 35% shop two or more times per week. Almost one in five households with incomes below $40,000 shop just once a month.

Shopping Online

Nearly one in five households (18%) have gone online to buy groceries in the past three months. Among these, 75% purchased at least 5% of their groceries online during this timeframe, and 20% bought more than half of their groceries online. Some 14% of Americans routinely buy at least 5% of their groceries online.

Consumers who buy at least 5% of their groceries online shop more frequently for groceries in stores than those who don’t buy any groceries online. Online grocery shoppers shop for groceries in stores an average of 10 times per month, as well as shopping online for groceries four times per month.
