Eight in 10 College Students Worry About Their Privacy Online

More than eight in 10 U.S. and U.K. college students (82%) express concerns about their online privacy and security, according to security software company AnchorFree. About half (47%) are solely concerned with keeping their personal data away from strangers, while 27% want to ensure their data are kept private from both strangers and friends.

More than six in 10 students (62%) use unsecured public Wi-Fi networks at least once a month, but only 25% of these say they always protect their privacy by using a VPN (virtual private network) when using public Wi-Fi.

While more than eight in 10 students (85%) use anti-virus software on their computers, just over a third (35%) use such software to protect their mobile devices.

Two-thirds of college students (68%) are very or extremely concerned that some of their online activities (such as social media posts or photos) might compromise their future job prospects or relationship with an employer. Only a third (33%) are very or extremely concerned about their college or university monitoring their online activities.
