In the wake of the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that is expected to overturn Roe V. Wade, abortion rights are poised to take center stage for many voters in the upcoming 2022 Midterm elections.
Twenty-Seven percent of voters say that the candidate they will vote for must share their views on abortion, according to a Gallup poll. 16% say it is not a major issue and an overwhelming 54% indicate that it will be one of many important factors in how they vote.
The poll ran from May 2-22, just after the leaked draft opinion. It indicated that an overwhelming percentage of Americans are opposed to overturning the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, and that most Americans have shifted towards greater support for legalized abortions.
While many who identify as Democrat of Liberal say that abortion rights will be their key factor in the midterms, especially if the Supreme Court does overturn Roe. However, it comes at a year when President Biden has a low approval rating and many are concerned about inflation and the economy. Both things which have, historically, worked agains the presidents party in midterm election years.
