Americans Divided on if Congress Should Raise Debt Ceiling

In order to prevent the Government from defaulting on its financial commitments, the United States Congress will need to raise the debt celling in the next few months, it is a tale as old as time. But polling from YouGov/the Economist shows that the American people are split on whether Congress should pass the increase or not.

Congress has regularly raised the debt ceiling in the past, in fact it seems this is a talking point on the news fairly regularly. However, this time there are more people saying that Congress shouldn’t pass (38%) than say that it should (33%). Republicans (62%) and conservatives (66%) are the most likely to say that the increase shouldn’t happen. House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy has gone on the record saying that he doesn’t want it passed yet and would like to use the negotiations as a way to force spending cuts. Only 27% of Americans overall approve how McCarthy is handling the job, compared to 48% of Republicans.
