Americans Vow To Lose Weight — As Usual

Health, fitness, and weight loss are perennial topics for New Year’s resolutions; only 6% of Americans who have made resolutions for 2012 cite goals other than these, according to The Integer Group and M/A/R/C Research. Women are more likely than men to make resolutions in general, and health/fitness-related resolutions in particular.

More than eight in 10 women (81%) have made resolutions for 2012, compared with 74% of men. Although men and women are equally likely to resolve to lose weight, women are more likely than men to resolve to eat healthier, get more fit, reduce their stress levels, get more sleep, and take more vitamins.

Most New Year’s resolutions are general — 44% resolve to improve their fitness and 43% to lose weight, but only 11% plan to go to and/or join a gym.

When asked how their health and fitness-related goals will affect their shopping behavior in 2012, consumers say they’ll buy less junk food (70%), more produce (56%), and more fresh ingredients (55%).
