Half of U.S. mobile subscribers (49.7%) own smartphones, as of February 2012, up from 36% in February 2011, according to Nielsen. Two thirds of new mobile purchases are of smartphones. Android is the most popular operating system, accounting for nearly half of all smartphones. Consumers who purchased smartphones in the past three months are more likely than smartphone owners overall to have iPhones.
