Texting, Facebook Fuel Romance

Six in 10 18-29-year-olds (60%) and 43% of all online adults have used text messaging to say “I love you” to a romantic partner, according to IBOPE Zogby International. Only 5% of 18-29-year-olds and 2% of adults overall have broken up with someone via text messaging.

Young adults ages 18-29 are more likely than adults overall to use Facebook for romantic purposes, but nearly half of all adult Facebook users have posted that they are “in a relationship” on their Facebook profiles.

Married adults (44%) are less likely than those who have civil unions (54%) to post their relationship information on their Facebook pages (67% of married adults and 71% of adults in civil unions use Facebook). Married women (52%) are more likely than married men (36%) to describe their status as “in a relationship” on their Facebook pages, though this is influenced by the larger proportion of married women (77%) than men (57%) who use Facebook.

Twitter users are less likely to post about their romantic lives; only 7% have tweeted about their relationships. [Relationships, Social Networking, Telecommunications]
