Seven in 10 Americans who have college degrees or more education (71%) identify themselves as middle class or upper-middle class, the lowest proportion to date, according to Gallup.
Among those with some college education but no degree, 58% consider themselves middle or upper-middle class. Some 42% of those with high school diplomas or less education describe themselves as middle or upper-middle class.
Overall, Americans are most likely to describe themselves as middle class or working class. Republicans (50%) are more likely than Democrats (38%) or Independents (40%) to describe themselves as middle class. About a third of Democrats (34%) and Independents (33%) consider themselves working class, compared with 26% of Republicans.
