Americans drank $12 billion worth of craft beer in 2012, up from $5.7 billion in 2007, according to Mintel. Annual sales of craft beer are expected to reach $18 billion by 2017. Although craft beer only accounts for 15% of total beer sales, it is experiencing growth at a time when consumption of domestic and imported beer is declining (calculations by Research Alert).

Nearly a quarter of U.S. beer drinkers (24%) purchased more craft beer at stores in 2012 than they did in 2001, and 22% purchased more craft beer at bars or restaurants.

More than a third of U.S. adults (36%) drink craft beer, and half of 25-34-year-olds (50%) do so. More than four in 10 adults (45%) say they’d try more craft beers if they knew more about them.

More than four in 10 Millennials and Gen Xers (43% of each) feel that craft beer tastes better than domestic beer, as do 32% of Baby Boomers.
