U.S. consumers spent $41.9 billion on online purchases in third-quarter 2012, up 15% from third-quarter 2011, according to comScore. The top categories for online purchases were digital content and subscriptions, consumer electronics, event tickets, apparel and accessories, and computer software. Spending in each of these categories increased 16% or more between third-quarter 2011 and the same period in 2012.
Nearly four in 10 consumers (37%) have engaged in showrooming (using a mobile device in-store to check prices or make purchases online), up from 32% in first-quarter 2012.
