Four In 10 Americans Make New Year’s Resolutions; Almost As Many Stick To Them

Four in 10 consumers (42%) make New Year’s resolutions every year, according to The Hartman Group. Almost one in 10 (8%) make the same or similar resolutions each year. The most common types of resolutions involve health or fitness, personal relationships, finances, and careers.

Half of consumers want to improve their personal relationships (50%) or financial situations (50%), 47% want to improve fitness, and 45% plan to change jobs or gain new professional skills. Three in 10 vow to lose weight (32%) or eat less junk food (30%).

Almost half (47%) want to improve their overall quality of life. Among these, 32% plan to do so by spending more time reading, and 21% by watching less TV.

Almost four in 10 Americans who make resolutions say they stick to them, while a third say their persistence diminishes by mid-year.
