Consumers made 5% more visits to convenience stores in fourth-quarter 2012 than they did during the same period in 2011, according to The NPD Group. Americans shopped at convenience stores 6.2 times per month in fourth-quarter 2012.
Convenience store shoppers bought an average of 3.4 items per trip in fourth-quarter 2012, the same as in 2011, but spent 31 cents more, partly because of inflation and partly because they bought a different mix of items.
More than half of those who shopped at convenience stores in fourth-quarter 2012 purchased non-alcoholic beverages (58%). Purchases of alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, and fresh foods increased between 2011 and 2012, while those of lottery tickets, newspapers, and magazines declined.
