Nearly nine in 10 Americans (88%) have a yard or other form of outdoor landscape at their homes; 94% of people with children have yards or landscapes, according to Planet, the national trade association for the landscaping industry. More than seven in 10 (72%) consider it important to maintain their yard or landscape (rating 7-10 on a 10-point scale), including 23% who consider it extremely important. The top reason for maintaining or landscaping the yard is to demonstrate pride in one’s home (42%). Creating a relaxing outdoor space (16%) and raising the property value of the home (15%) are the next most commonly given reasons, followed by creating a safe play area for children or pets (8%).
Americans use their yards most often for general relaxation and gardening.
When choosing a professional landscaping service, Americans are most likely to rely on referrals from people they know.
Price (69%) and quality of work (68%) are about equal in importance to landscaping customers. About a third are concerned with customer service (35%) or referrals or references for the company (33%), and 26% want to ensure that the company is professionally certified or licensed. One in 10 (9%) want landscaping services that use sustainable practices.
