Teens Prefer Old-Fashioned SATs; Parents Push for Digital

6/1/2013

More than eight in 10 teens (81%) prefer to take the SAT exams using pen and paper, whereas 65% of parents support a change to a computer-based format, according to Kaplan Test Prep. The primary reasons teens are against the format switch are being unable to do “scratch work” on math problems, a lack of typing proficiency for essay writing, potential technical difficulties, and the challenges of looking at a computer screen for four hours.

Parents are more likely than teens to think the SAT needs to be changed (45% vs. 39%). Nonetheless, the earliest graduating class that could be affected by possible SAT changes is 2016.
