Parents living in liberal communities are more likely to name their children with softer, more feminine sounds, such as “l,” while parents in conservative-leaning communities are more likely to select masculine-skewing sounds, such as “k,” “b,” and “d,” according to University of Chicago research. Liberal well-educated parents are more likely to select obscure names, while conservative well-educated parents choose conventional and old-fashioned names. Less-educated parents are more likely to give their children an uncommon or unique name.
Researchers believe liberals select baby names as a way to distinguish their culture and education; conservative parents seek baby names that will position their children for future financial and career success.
