Hispanics Eat Most Lunches at Home

8/2/13

U.S. Hispanics are more likely than non-Hispanics to eat lunch at home, according to the NPD Group. Hispanics eat 73% of their lunches at home, while non-Hispanics eat only 62% of their lunches at home.

Hispanics whose preferred language is Spanish make up just 29% of total lunch traffic in restaurants. Lunch is typically the largest meal of the day for U.S. Hispanics, and Hispanics’ lunches include a wider array of foods than those of non-Hispanics. For example, 38% of non-Hispanics’ lunches include sandwiches, but only 18% of Hispanics’ lunches do (though sandwiches are the single most popular item in Hispanics’ lunches). Some 13% of Hispanics’ lunches include rice, compared to just 1% of non-Hispanics’ lunches. Rice is included in 8% of all meals eaten at home by Hispanics, compared to 2% of in-home meals among the general population. Rice dishes eaten for lunch by Hispanics are often homemade, prepared using cooking oils and spices, rather than heat-and-serve items.
