SodaStream Learns It’s Not Easy Being Green

9/1/13

U.S. families purchased more than 1.2 million SodaStream appliances in 2012, according to company figures. The product creates carbonated water, to which users can then add one of the 80 different concentrated syrups.

SodaStream promotes the environmental attractiveness of eliminating one-use beverage containers.

Yet company executives say another pro-environment benefit-gas canisters-is also its biggest challenge. “It’s been a real headache,” says company representative Alexis Engel. “We can’t ship our CO2 containers in the mail, and customers want to be able to ship them back to us. We have been going back-and-forth with UPS and hopefully can resolve something by the end of the year.”

Recent new products include the energy drink eBoost with “Biggest Loser” trainer Jillian Michaels and a cocktail line of syrups.
