Bullying Decreases as Students Age

11/1/2013

The percentage of students who are bullied decreases steadily from the 3rd to the 12th grade, according to a joint project by Hazelden and Clemson University. The number of students who bully others peaks in the 8th to the 10th grades. In general, 16% of students are bullied at school at least two or three times a month. Some 7% of students are bullies. And 14% of students are “often” afraid of being bullied.

Boys bully boys; girls bully girls. The most common forms of bullying are verbal (experienced by 16% of girls; 17% of boys) and rumor spreading (15% of girls, 11% of boys). The least common types of bullying involve damage to property (4% of girls, 5% of boys) and cyberbullying (6% of girls, 4% of boys).

More than half of bullied students (51%) had been bullied for at least six months, and 30% of bullied high school girls and 41% of bullied high school boys do not tell anyone about being bullied. Among those that do discuss bullying, students are more likely to tell parents than teachers, siblings, or friends.
