Seven in 10 black women (70%) say they currently wear or have worn their hair natural, without relaxer or perm, in the past 12 months, according to Mintel. More than half have worn braids (53%), and 41% have worn locks.
Black hair care sales are expected to reach $152 million this year, down from $206 million in 2008. However, shampoo and conditioner formulated for black hair is projected to grow from $211 million in 2008 to $257 million in 2013. Likewise, hair color for black women is expected to jump from $32 million in 2008 to $36 million in 2013.
Most black women (51%) say it’s worth spending more on hair care products to achieve the best results, and 39% enjoy experimenting with new products. Around one in two (48%) believe natural or curly hairstyles “exude confidence,” and another 48% say they are daring. A similar percentage (45%) say natural hairstyles are trendy.
