Pay-TV penetration stands at 83% of U.S. households this year, reports Leichtman Research Group (LRG), based on its latest survey of 1,000+ adults.
Pay-TV penetration has been on the decline this decade, down from 87% in 2010, although it remains up from the 81% registered in 2005.
The total number of subscribers this year is in fact on par with the number in 2010, but occupied housing additions over the past 5 years means that the penetration rate is down.
In other highlights from the report:
- Renters living in TV households are about twice as likely as owners to not subscribe to a pay-TV service (23% vs. 12%);
- Roughly 1 in 5 respondents who moved in the past year do not subscribe to a pay-TV service;
- More than 6 in 10 (62% of) households not subscribing to a pay-TV service subscribe to a subscription video-on-demand service.
