Biden’s Job Approval at 42%, Higher on Race Relations, Ukraine

President Joe Biden’s job approval rating is holding steady at 42% but his ratings are low average level on nine key issues.

47% approve of how the President is handling the situation in Ukraine, and 46% like his approach to race relations which are slightly higher than his overall approval rating. 44% of American adults approve of his handling of education but his ratings are much lower (four in 10 approval) in six issues, immigration, foreign affairs, relations with Russia and China, labor disputes and the economy.

Biden’s rating on his handling of the current economy has risen five points since March, while the economy shows signs of improvement. But his ratings remain weak, 37% and is below the 54% recorded by Gallup shorting after he was inaugurated in 2021. His job approval has averaged 41% over the past year.

Democrats approval remains high at 87%, while 39% of independents and 3% of Republicans approve of him. Democrats’ approval has averaged between 78% and 87% since December 2021.

Democrats are twice as likely to approve of Biden on each other nine issues. Republicans approval in seven of the issues is in the single digits, race relations (16%) and the situation in Ukraine (13%) earned him slightly higher ratings from Republicans.

Overall, the American peoples approval of Biden’s job and his handling of nine issues are middling and steady at best-approval for the handling of the situation in Ukraine tops out at 47%. Members of his own party remain firm in their approval of him but his weakest ratings from them are how he handled China and immigration. Less than half of Independents approve of his job in any measures-including 39% overall approval rating.

With the 2024 Presidential election approaching quickly, increased attention will be paid to Biden’s approval rating and how it will impact his electability. Should his ratings continue to be in the low 40s, history suggests he would be unlikely to win re-election.
