EU Retaliatory Tariffs Include All U.S. Alcoholic and Nonalcoholic Beverages

The 50% tariffs announced last week by the European Union in response to President Trump’s global tariffs on steel and aluminum apply to all U.S.-produced beer, wine and spirits as well as nonalcoholic beverages and a wide range of other agricultural products.

The list also includes products derived from agricultural products, such as clothing, and steel and aluminum.

It appears the list was carefully chosen to target states with Republican congressmen, on the theory that they might persuade Trump to rescind his worldwide tariffs on steel and aluminum, or at least exempt the EU from them.

Yesterday, the House leadership inserted a provision in a bill extending the U.S. government’s budget until the end of fiscal 2026 that effectively prevented House Democrats from obtaining votes on a measure calling on Trump to reverse some tariffs.

After voting to approve extending the current budget – with some changes – the House left town. That leaves the Senate with the option of accepting the House measure or rejecting it, but not amending it. The measure will need Democratic votes to clear the 60-vote threshold for most legislation. The Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
