Consumer scans of UPC and QR codes with mobile devices doubled between September 2010 and September 2011, according to ScanLife, which processes 1D (UPC) and 2D (QR) code scans (both its own and those developed by other companies).
The number of individual users of UPC and QR bar code scanning increased by 525% during this time (though the total number of users remains small —Ed.). As scanning by consumers becomes more common, the product mix for which consumers scan codes is shifting. Grocery products accounted for 40% of all UPC codes scanned by consumers in 2011, up from 14% in 2010.
The demographics of mobile code scanning are also shifting; women made up 43% of ScanLife’s mobile scanning app users in third-quarter 2011, up from 30% in third-quarter 2010.
