Teens Use Digital Devices To Do Homework

Nearly four in 10 tweens ages 11-14 (39%) use a smartphone at home for schoolwork, according to research firm TRU. Two in three (65%) use laptops, and 31% do homework on tablets.

Tweens don’t have the same access to technology while at school. Only 31% work on laptops while at school, 18% use tablets, and 6% use smartphones. Among students whose schools allow them to use mobile devices on campus, 75% say their schools provide laptops, and 55% say their schools provide tablets.

Smartphone ownership increases from 42% among 6th graders to 57% among 8th graders. Smartphone usage is highest among Hispanic tweens (49%), followed by Black (42%) and White (36%) tweens. Similarly, tablets are used by 38% of Hispanic tweens, 30% of Black tweens, and 31% of white tweens. Laptops are used by 68% of Hispanic teens, 64% of Black teens, and 62% of White teens.
