More than eight in 10 parents (82%) say their children’s behavior reflects their parenting skills, according to Parenting magazine. More than half (57%) won’t deliver forgotten homework to school more than once, and 54% insist that their kids finish an activity they’ve started even if they don’t like it. Nearly six in 10 (58%) say their kids have chores, and 33% of kids with chores don’t receive an allowance for these activities.
Almost two in three (64%) spend at least two hours a day having fun with their kids, 18% feel family time is more important than extracurricular activities, and 16% limit their children’s commitments to no more than two extracurricular activities.
Most parents (83%) say they and their kids eat dinner together most nights, though stay-at-home moms say this happens more frequently than working moms (87% vs. 81%).
More than eight in 10 parents with children under age 13 (83%) have not let them join Facebook, and 44% of all parents do not have any parental controls on their computers. While 34% believe sheltering kids from outside influences isn’t a bad idea; 23% are so concerned about harmful influences that they would consider homeschooling their children.
Nearly all parents (95%) say their families socialize with friends of different races, religions, and ethnicities, and 78% make an effort to discuss diversity with their children .
A majority of parents (54%) belong to an organized religion, but only 27% attend weekly services. Parents are evenly split on whether same-sex families are just like any other families or whether they are different (27% each). More than a quarter (26%) don’t know any same-sex families and haven’t discussed this issue with their children.
