Millennial Parents Outspend Older Parents on Family Entertainment

6/1/2013

More than one in three millennial-aged parents (36%) are spending more on family entertainment now than a year ago, compared to 17% of older-aged parents who are doing so, according to Mintel. Some 42% of parents are spending less on family entertainment now than a year ago.

Nearly eight in 10 millennial dads spend less than $300 per month on family entertainment. However, millennial dads are twice as likely as men over age 35 to spend more than $300 per month (21% vs. 11%). Few millennial women (7%) spend more than $300 per month on family entertainment.

Both parents and children enjoy spending time together. More than nine in 10 parents (91%) say members of their family have a good time when they’re together. Meanwhile, 77% of kids ages 6-11 say they like spending time with their family, and 73% of 12-to-17-year-olds say they “really like” to be with their family.

Nonetheless, 25% of parents say kids’ extracurricular activities reduce the time they are able to spend together and another 25% say their spouse or partner doesn’t have time for family activities due to work obligations. Nearly three in 10 parents (29%) say budget restrictions prevent their families from participating in their entertainment activities of choice.
